Sale of Imported Potatoes Banned at the National Wholesale Market

Sale of Imported Potatoes Banned at the National Wholesale Market

Starting from August 25 and continuing until December, only locally produced potatoes will be allowed for sale at the National Wholesale Market. This measure aims to protect local production.

The Agricultural Marketing Board (AMB) announced this decision through a statement issued on Monday. "Every year, when the local production begins, whether for potatoes or onions, we issue statements. This year, local potato production started in mid-July and is now in full swing. To protect local farmers and reduce competition, we have made this decision," explained Beny Ramcharan, Assistant General Manager of the AMB.

In practice, AMB officers will be present daily at the National Wholesale Market to ensure strict compliance with this ban. Any attempt to sell imported potatoes will be penalized.

Furthermore, the AMB announces that onion production is expected to soon enter its active phase. A similar measure will be applied to these crops as soon as the local harvest is deemed sufficient to supply the market. "Bidders will be informed in due course," assures Beny Ramcharan.
