AGOA: What does the future hold for our exports?

On October 1st, Mauritius awoke to a harsh reality: the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) has expired. Unless Congress retroactively extends it, duty-free access to the U.S. market is lost. This represents a significant pillar — often a crutch — of our export model. Washington had months to take action, yet it failed to do so. The White House suggested that a one-year extension might be possible, but Congress did not vote before September 30th.
