Consumption: Prices of Rotis and Dholl Puris Rise by Rs 3

Consumption has taken a hit as prices for rotis and dholl puris have increased by Rs 3 since October 1st. Previously, these items were selling for between Rs 20 and Rs 25.

According to merchants, this price hike was unavoidable due to the surge in dry grain prices, even though there has been a recent decrease in the prices of flour and oil.

Ramsahye Maraz, director of Ramsahye Maraz & Sons, also notes that since October 1st, some Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are now required to pay VAT imposed on businesses with a turnover exceeding Rs 3 million.

On his part, Jayen Chellum, the General Secretary of the Consumers Association of Mauritius (ACIM), deems this price increase excessive. He urges the government to intervene, believing that some merchants are taking advantage of the situation.
