Buses: A Card for Payments Introduced

The Cabinet has approved a significant reform of the bus services sector in Mauritius. The Ministry of Land Transport has received permission to issue instructions to the Attorney General's office for the drafting of the Bus Services Bill. This legislation aims to modernize, structure, and professionalize public transport.

According to the Minister of Land Transport, Osman Mahomed, this reform is part of an initiative to modernize collective transport. Its purpose is to better meet users' needs and improve service quality.

"There will be GPS and video surveillance in the buses. A cashless payment system, using a card similar to the metro, will be introduced. There will also be display boards at bus stations indicating the arrival times of buses, along with a mobile application," he stated.

The Bus Services Bill will outline new obligations for transport operators, enhance safety on board, and improve the transparency of the system. The project also aims for better supervision of schedules and routes to ensure increased service regularity and better coordination between lines.

This initiative aligns with the government's vision of promoting integrated, safe, accessible, and technologically advanced public transport. The goal is to reduce dependence on cars, encourage sustainable mobility, and ease traffic flow on the roads.
