Deadly Assault: Ranjeet Ram Sentenced to Three Years in Prison
A robbery gone wrong. Ranjeet Ram, 38, was sentenced to three years in prison by the Intermediate Court following the fatal assault on security guard Chanand Sepaul, 58. This incident occurred on February 21, 2014, in Fond-du-Sac, where the accused attempted to steal diesel and batteries from a construction site.
Co-defendants Adriano Jason Jerry Ravat (29) and Mohammad Naeem Korimbocus (37) also participated in the theft, receiving two-year prison sentences, while Mohammad Nadeem Korimbocus (32) was sentenced to eight months. All four defendants pleaded guilty.
Ranjeet Ram explained the circumstances of the crime, stating he arrived at the construction site in Fond-du-Sac around 8 PM with his accomplices. He confronted a security guard who demanded to know why he was there. In an altercation, he struck the guard on the head with a stick to prevent him from shouting and kicked him as well. He claimed he did not intend to kill the guard and mentioned the guard was still breathing when they left the scene.
Apologies
Magistrate Nithiraj Bisnathsing considered the defendants' testimonies, their criminal records, and the aggravating circumstances. They expressed their apologies. "This court takes the wanton use of violence very seriously, regardless of the excuses provided," the magistrate stated. The defendants are repeat offenders, leading to the prison sentence.
Ranjeet Ram gained notoriety on April 12, 2021, when he accused medical negligence after his infant died during his wife's delivery at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital in Pamplemousses.
