Disciplinary Actions Against the Involved Officers
Disciplinary actions are set to be taken against the concerned officers. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam expressed his concern over "disturbing facts" revealed in the NHRC report regarding incidents that occurred on July 17, 2025, at the high-security prison of Melrose. This report, presented to his office, was made public on Friday, October 3.
In response to a question from MP and leader of the New Democrats, Khushal Lobine, Ramgoolam confirmed that the government was aware of the report's content and that it was released "in line with our policy of transparency and accountability."
The Prime Minister did not hide his worry about the findings of the investigation. "I am concerned about the disturbing facts presented in the report," he stated. Emphasizing the seriousness of the issues highlighted, he reminded everyone that "the respect for human rights and the application of Articles 5(1) and 5(2) of the Constitution are the cornerstones of any civilized society."
The report noted, among other things, excessive use of force by prison authorities and police present at the scene. Navin Ramgoolam reaffirmed his government's stance on fundamental rights: "My government will always uphold the sanctity of human rights and the dignity of all our citizens. Any transgression will not be tolerated."
Regarding the measures to be taken, the Prime Minister announced that clear instructions have been given to the relevant authorities. "The Commissioner of Police and the Commissioner of Prisons have been asked to take immediate action, not only to implement the recommendations made but also to initiate necessary disciplinary actions against all involved officers," he specified, adding that these actions will be carried out "in consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions."
