At a Construction Site in Ebène: 600 Nepalese Workers Strike to Protest Abuses

A strike has erupted at a construction site in Ebène, involving 600 Nepalese workers employed by the Beijing Civil Engineering Group. They are protesting serious irregularities regarding their living conditions and legal status. On Monday, at the CTSP headquarters, the strikers presented their situation. Their work permits have been expired for over 18 months, with no efforts made by their employer to renew them. Additionally, they are living in deplorable housing conditions: dormitories without running water or adequate sanitation facilities.

These Nepalese workers also claim they are being paid below the agreed amounts, despite enduring long and arduous workdays. They demand the regularization of their status and the ability to send money back to their families in Nepal, which is suffering from a severe economic crisis. Lawyer Me Khavi Chetty has stated that he was not informed of the situation. Meanwhile, union representative Reaz Chuttoo is urging the government to promptly reform the system: "There are several thousand workers whose work permits have expired in the country… The law needs to become stricter; we need to find a solution quickly!"
