Homelessness: Towards Registration in the Social Register

The number of homeless individuals in Mauritius has now surpassed 151, according to Junior Minister of Social Security, Kugan Parapen. An increasing number of women, often accompanied by their children, are affected, he stated.

During a press conference on Thursday, October 9, with Minister Ashok Subron and several NGOs — including Passerelle, Hands of Mercy, and Professional First Aiders — it was emphasized that registering the homeless in the Social Register of Mauritius (RSM) is crucial for them to receive state assistance, particularly in terms of housing.

Another concerning observation is that many young people end up on the streets after leaving shelters upon reaching adulthood, often without guidance or identification.

Mélanie Valère-Ciceron, president of Passerelle, called for better support, especially for homeless women, just ahead of World Homeless Day.
