Bribery of Rs 200 to Avoid a Ticket: Director Sentenced to 90 Hours of Community Service

A verdict was delivered after 11 years in front of the Financial Crimes Division (FCD). On October 3, 2025, Gunshyam Jeetun, a company director, had his three-month prison sentence commuted to 90 hours of community service. This resident of Montagne-Longue offered a bribe of Rs 200 to a police officer to avoid a fine. On July 4, 2025, Magistrate Alvin Joypaul found the director guilty, based on the defendant's confession, where he admitted to giving the Rs 200 to the officer to evade the ticket.

During the sentencing arguments, the accused expressed remorse, claiming that he made a "judgment error" that day and acted out of panic. The Court also noted that he had a clean criminal record. On August 8, 2025, Gunshyam Jeetun was initially sentenced to three months in prison. However, the FCD suspended the execution of the sentence pending a social inquiry to determine if he could perform community service. Following a favorable report, the prison sentence was converted to 90 hours of social work. He is required to appear before the court again on December 19, 2025.

In this case, the 54-year-old company director pleaded not guilty before the FCD, accused of "bribery of a public official." He was alleged to have offered a Rs 200 bribe to a corporal of the Divisional Supporting Unit (DSU) of Port-Louis North on March 28, 2014, to avoid a fine.
