A National Consumer Council Will Be Established
The government is taking action to better protect consumers. Meeting on Friday, October 10th, the Council of Ministers approved the preparation of a new piece of legislation, the Consumer Protection Bill. Instructions will be sent to the Attorney General’s Office to draft the initial version.
This legislation will merge the Consumer Protection Act and the Fair Trading Act to create a modern and cohesive legal framework that is better suited to market realities and aims to enhance consumer confidence.
The Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection has already initiated a series of consultations with various ministries, regulators, the private sector, and consumer associations.
The future bill will include several new features, including the establishment of a National Consumer Council, strengthening consumer rights, procedures for recalling hazardous products, the ability to summon traders, and the introduction of new provisions to address emerging priorities.
With this reform, the government aims to modernize consumer protection and provide a fairer and more transparent framework for all market participants.
