Nicolas Von Mally, Leader of the Rodrigues Movement: "The Autonomy of Rodrigues Has Been a Mixed Success"

Nicolas Von Mally, leader of the Rodrigues Movement, stated in an exclusive interview as Rodrigues celebrates its 23rd anniversary of regional autonomy, that while there have been some advancements over the years, they remain limited. He highlighted improvements in infrastructure, such as roads and access paths to villages, as well as social and educational initiatives like the banning of plastic bags and the closure of octopus fishing. However, he believes these achievements are modest and emphasized the need for an economic revolution to match the political change that granted Rodrigues its autonomous status.

Von Mally pointed out significant delays in crucial infrastructure projects like the airport and port, arguing that political opponents often prefer to undermine ideas rather than engage in constructive debate. He expressed frustration over the lack of progress and the failure to connect Rodrigues with an optical cable.

Water scarcity continues to be a major issue for Rodrigues. Von Mally criticized the desalination project, deeming it unsuccessful due to irregular water supply. He suggested that building dams would be a more effective solution, as there are numerous options available to address the water crisis on the island.

He also spoke of Rodrigues's economic independence, asserting that the island still has untapped resources despite the challenges faced. He recalled a time when Rodrigues was self-sufficient and suggested that proper management of water resources could lead to a green revolution on the island. He lamented the reliance on Mauritius for basic goods like salt and highlighted the potential for Rodrigues to thrive economically with better vision and planning.

On political matters, Von Mally was critical of the current leadership, referring to personal interests over those of Rodrigues. He expressed concern over the lack of priority given to health care, noting the alarming state of medical equipment.

He remains open to returning to active politics if needed by the people, emphasizing that his peace of mind takes precedence over power. Looking towards the future, he called for unity among the people of Rodrigues to foster a pragmatic economic vision, urging collaboration instead of division caused by outdated practices and egos that hinder progress.
