Mental Health: Middlesex University Mauritius Strengthens Awareness and Support for Youth
To commemorate World Mental Health Day, Middlesex University Mauritius emphasized the importance of ongoing support for its students through psychological assistance, which is a major priority for the university. On October 9 and 10, activities were organized on campus around the theme "Promoting Mental Health and Suicide-safe Communities for Young People." The university grounds became a hub for exchanges where health professionals, students, staff, and members of the public engaged in interactive activities, attended personal testimony sessions, and participated in enriching discussions, in collaboration with the Mauritius Council of Social Service (MACOSS) and the Rotary Club of Helvetia Happiness. These initiatives reflect Middlesex University Mauritius's commitment to listening to and supporting its students, while promoting their well-being and personal growth.
The symposium on October 10 brought together a panel of experts in psychology and mental health, moderated by Dr. Émile Rivet Duval, a clinical psychologist from the Konekte listening service. The event began with a welcome speech from Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Director of Middlesex University Mauritius, and also welcomed Anishta Babooram, Minister of Health, and Niousha Tirvassen, President of the Rotary Club of Helvetia Happiness. Discussions focused on understanding youth suicide, a major public health issue with alarming statistics, the support mechanisms available through the NGO Befrienders Mauritius, the impact of digital media and social networks, and practical prevention strategies. These discussions were preceded by an interactive awareness campaign led by MACOSS the day before. This approach enhances mental well-being awareness and underscores Middlesex University Mauritius’s intention to create inclusive and supportive communities for its students.
