Mauritius Faces Risk of Power Outage Tonight: 'It's the Worst-Case Scenario,' Says Thierry Ramasawmy
Mauritius is facing an emergency situation this Wednesday, October 15, regarding electricity supply. The Central Electricity Board (CEB) is currently working to prevent outages in certain parts of the island this evening. Forecasts indicate a production of 466 MW starting tonight, while demand is estimated at 445 MW, leaving little room for error.
In the 10 AM news flash on Radio Plus, CEB spokesperson Thierry Ramasawmy explained the causes of this concerning situation. A 30-megawatt engine at the Fort George power plant failed on the evening of Tuesday, October 14.
"Repairs are underway. We hope to have this engine back in service before 6 PM to ensure electricity supply," stated Thierry Ramasawmy.
The CEB has also called on hotels to temporarily integrate into the power network to help alleviate demand. The agency assures that it is doing everything possible to avoid a general outage tonight.
"This is the worst-case scenario," added the spokesperson, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
The CEB urges consumers to be vigilant and responsible in their electricity consumption until the situation is fully restored.
