Energy Crisis: "Efforts are being made, but it’s too late," says Paul Bérenger

Interim Prime Minister Paul Bérenger addressed a press conference this morning. In response to a question about the energy crisis facing the country, he stated that there is now insufficient time to implement the necessary solutions.

"The installation of renewable energy sources can take between one and three years. While it is important to apply the baseload, that does not address the current situation," he remarked.

Regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG), which could also take up to two years for implementation, Paul Bérenger highlighted the significant costs involved: "This requires billions, and Mauritius will need assistance to achieve this." He added that discussions are ongoing with Qatar.

The interim government leader praised the efforts made by hotels and citizens to reduce electricity consumption. He believes that more solar water heaters should be installed in Mauritian households.

"Despite all this, it is too late. We face the risk of facing a severe crisis by the end of the year," he concluded.
