Mauritius and India Strengthen Their Partnership Through Senior Exchange Initiatives

On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, an Indian delegation from the Senior Citizens Council of New Delhi, led by its president, J. R. Gupta, met in Port Louis with Ashok Subron, the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, along with Deputy Minister Kugan Parapen. The president of the Senior Citizens Council of Mauritius, Gava Naraidoo, was also present.

This visit follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Senior Citizens Councils of Mauritius and India in 2006, aimed at promoting exchanges among elderly groups from both countries.

During the meeting, Ashok Subron emphasized the longstanding and sustainable relations between Mauritius and India. He highlighted the importance of the ties between the peoples of both nations, noting that familial, cultural, and historical connections continue to strengthen bilateral relations. He also mentioned the generations of Indian workers who have come to Mauritius and significantly contributed to shaping the country’s sociocultural fabric.

The minister further discussed the demographic changes in Mauritius, pointing out the significant social and economic implications of an aging population. He stressed that the government must find a balance between ensuring care, protection, and dignity for the elderly while also responding to the aspirations of the youth.

Kugan Parapen acknowledged the profound respect that Mauritius has for its elderly citizens. He noted that the country has 206 centenarians, a figure that underscores the increasing importance that the nation places on the well-being of its aging population. Regarding demographic changes, he observed that approximately 20% of the Mauritian population is currently over 60 years old, compared to 9.7% in India.

J.R. Gupta stated that this visit is part of the ongoing exchange program initiated by the memorandum of understanding signed in 2006, which aims to strengthen friendship ties between the two countries.
