According to the NEF, 85% of heads of households registered in the Social Register do not hold a School Certificate.
Approximately 15,000 individuals are currently registered in the Social Register of Mauritius, including 3,800 families in Mauritius and 3,000 in Rodrigues. These households receive support from the state through the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF).
At a symposium in Côte d’Or, organized in conjunction with the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the NEF reaffirmed its commitment on several fronts, including employment, education, and emergency assistance during crises. It also aims to strengthen collaboration with NGOs to better target its support for the most vulnerable families.
The NEF reports that 85% of heads of households registered in the Social Register do not possess a School Certificate and primarily hold low-paying jobs. Furthermore, 76% of registered unemployed individuals have not completed Form IV.
In terms of education, the foundation grants a school bonus to students who pass national exams. An amount of Rs 665 million has already been disbursed from a total budget of 1 billion rupees for the current fiscal year.
On the social front, 40 homes from the National Housing Development Company have been allocated to beneficiaries of the SRM. Twenty-five homes were offered to those who already owned land, and another 20 to families who lost their homes due to fire or flooding. The budget allocated for this aspect amounts to Rs 67 million.
Additionally, Rs 16 million has been mobilized to support vulnerable families through vocational training, the distribution of sanitary pads for girls, baby diapers, and medical assistance.
