Resting Season for Water Lilies

Resting Season for Water Lilies

If you notice the sad appearance of the water lilies at the Pamplemousses Garden, don't panic! The famous green giants are simply going through their resting season. The drop in temperatures between June and October causes the leaves to brown before the flowers revive during the summer. This is clarified by the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden Trust in Pamplemousses in a statement.

This is a natural step in the life cycle of these queens from the Amazon. In their native habitat, heat and light are constant. Here in Mauritius, the coolness causes them to slow down. The water lilies then enter a resting phase.

The management of the Pamplemousses Garden wants to reassure visitors: the gardeners check daily, clean the ponds, remove wilted leaves, and monitor water quality.

Between November and April, the magic happens again. The pond transforms: the leaves spread out, the flowers bloom, and the spectacle comes back to life—majestic, like a floating painting.
