[IOWave25] Mauritius Participates in the Regional Tsunami Simulation Exercise

Mauritius participated in the regional tsunami simulation and preparedness exercise, Indian Ocean Wave 2025 (IOWave25), held on Thursday in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO. This exercise brought together around twenty countries bordering the Indian Ocean, with the aim of strengthening tsunami preparedness, early warning systems, and the response capabilities of participating states.

Mauritius' participation was coordinated by the Prime Minister’s Office, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) and the Mauritius Meteorological Services. Through this initiative, the country was able to test and evaluate its national alert and coordination mechanisms in the event of a tsunami while enhancing inter-institutional collaboration and raising awareness among coastal communities.

Under the direction of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in the Indian Ocean (ICG/IOTWMS), the IOWave25 exercise aligns with the global goal of an effective tsunami warning system for all. It includes regular simulations, training, and technical exercises aimed at improving the responsiveness of authorities and populations.

The 2025 edition tested two distinct scenarios: a tsunami caused by seismic activity (underwater earthquake) and a tsunami resulting from a non-seismic event, such as a volcanic eruption. These scenarios assess communication protocols, emergency procedures, and coordination between national and local authorities.

In Mauritius, Rodrigues, and Agaléga, field simulations engaged local authorities, tourism operators, and residents of the affected coastal areas. These exercises aim to strengthen risk culture and community preparedness to ensure a swift and effective response in the event of an actual tsunami threat.

IOWave25 is part of a proactive approach to safety and resilience, reaffirming Mauritius' commitment to anticipating natural risks and protecting its citizens against climate and geophysical hazards.
