Latest Ministry Figures: Mauritius has 148 Credit Cooperatives and 57,000 Members
Mauritius currently has 148 credit cooperatives, with over 57,000 members, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the cooperative movement. These figures were highlighted by the Minister of Industry, SMEs, and Cooperatives, Aadil Ameer Meea, during a recent workshop at the National Co-operative College in Bois Marchand, held in celebration of International Credit Union Day.
"These figures reflect the essential role that these institutions play in the economic and social life of the country," stated the minister. He praised the theme "Cooperation for a Prosperous World," which he believes reminds us that "when we help each other, everyone progresses."
Aadil Ameer Meea also stressed the need to enhance good governance and transparency, while encouraging digitalization and cybersecurity in the management of cooperatives. These measures, he noted, aim to protect members and their savings while aligning Mauritius with international standards.
For the minister, cooperatives remain a pillar of solidarity, honesty, and shared prosperity, contributing to building a more just and inclusive society.
