The Mauritius Labour Congress Advocates for the Return of Daylight Saving Time
The Mauritius Labour Congress (MLC) is advocating for the reintroduction of Daylight Saving Time in Mauritius, from November to May.
According to its president, Haniff Peerun, this measure would help reduce energy consumption during peak hours.
This proposal comes after the country recently experienced a red energy alert for nearly two hours, as part of a new system implemented by the Central Electricity Board (CEB). This system aims to prevent strain on the electrical grid during the summer period.
It's worth noting that Daylight Saving Time was previously tested in Mauritius in 2008.
In a letter addressed to the Minister of Energy, the union believes that such a measure could allow the CEB to save between 10 and 20 megawatts of electricity.
