Illegal Fundraising: 27-Year-Old Arrested for Identity Theft of a Doctor
A 27-year-old resident of Mesnil was arrested by the CID of Piton on Sunday, October 19, for organizing a fraudulent fundraising campaign by impersonating a doctor.
The incident came to light on October 9 when a resident of Poudre d’Or Hamlet alerted the real physician, aged 35, that someone was using his name to solicit money.
Accompanied by a relative, the doctor immediately went to the scene. Caught in the act, the suspect was asked for his identification and documents before fleeing.
After several days of searching, the CID of Piton managed to apprehend him on Sunday. During questioning, the young man confessed. He admitted to having forged a permit and counterfeited a medical certificate bearing the letterhead of a private clinic to extort money.
His mobile phone was seized, but a search of his home revealed nothing incriminating.
The suspect participated in a reenactment of the events before being placed in custody. He is set to appear in court on Tuesday, October 21.
