The Ministry of Health Announces Recruitment of 700 Nurses by 2027

A group of 300 newly recruited nurses enrolled in the National Diploma in Nursing Level 6 officially began their journey in the healthcare profession during an induction ceremony held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, in Pamplemousses.

Present at the event, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, urged the new recruits to uphold human values such as compassion, courage, dedication, empathy, and patience as they embark on this noble adventure in service to the community.

Anil Bachoo encouraged the recruits to learn, grow, and evolve into dedicated professionals, recognizing their crucial role as pillars of the healthcare system. He urged them to make the most of this three-year program, which includes practical clinical training aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills to provide quality healthcare.

The minister praised the hard work of healthcare staff in Mauritius while highlighting the current workforce challenges. He reiterated the ministry's commitment to improving the healthcare system through a comprehensive strategic human resources plan. In this regard, 500 nurses will be recruited in 2026, followed by another 200 in 2027.

To address the shortage of healthcare personnel, the minister recalled efforts to recruit retired nurses on a contractual basis to replace healthcare professionals currently on unpaid leave for specialization.

Anil Bachoo also mentioned the upcoming recruitment of specialized healthcare professionals and health assistants, emphasizing the ministry's proactive approach to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare sector.
