The Health Minister Meets with Specialist Doctors Performing Kidney Transplants

On Thursday, October 23, 2025, Anil Bachoo, the Minister of Health and Wellness, met with specialist doctors visiting Mauritius to perform kidney transplants at Victoria Hospital in Candos.

Three renal transplant experts are in Mauritius to share their knowledge and collaborate with the Mauritian medical team to carry out kidney transplants. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve specialized healthcare services in the country.

After visiting patients who had undergone kidney transplants, the Minister praised the collaboration between the visiting medical experts and Mauritian healthcare professionals, which allows patients to access advanced medical services in their home country.

Anil Bachoo emphasized the ministry's commitment to expanding the country's specialized healthcare capabilities, while also highlighting the potential to introduce liver transplant and oncology procedures in the future.

Earlier in the day, the minister met with French vitreo-retinal surgeon, Professor Stéphanie Baillif, who performed eighteen complex eye surgeries at Souillac Hospital.

Senior transplant consultant, Dr. Sonal Asthana from Bangalore, reiterated his support for developing kidney transplant capabilities in Mauritius.

Consultant transplant surgeon Dr. Suraj Sobnach, from South Africa, expressed his satisfaction with working alongside Mauritian surgeons and medical staff, stressing the importance of enabling patients to receive care in their home country. He reaffirmed his commitment to returning to Mauritius every six weeks to perform kidney transplants, noting that three successful procedures had been carried out during this visit.
