Road Rage: 237 Incidents in Mauritius Over Three Years
"Traffic jams, impatience, insults, and sometimes even physical aggression": the phenomenon of road rage is gaining ground on Mauritian roads.
Between January 2022 and October 2, 2025, police recorded 237 incidents related to aggressive or violent behavior on the road.
Videos of these altercations are regularly shared on social media, provoking public outrage.
But what drives some drivers to lose control? Why does a simple frustration behind the wheel sometimes explode into genuine rage?
Sociologist Rajen Suntoo believes that this behavior stems from a lack of civility and courtesy among certain motorists, particularly among the younger crowd.
Alain Jeannot from the NGO Road Safety at All Costs expresses concern over the situation. He advocates for stricter laws to better regulate and penalize these dangerous behaviors.
Meanwhile, ASP Suhail Lidialam, spokesperson for the Central Barracks, reminds us that legal provisions already exist to curb road violence. However, he calls for civic sense and mutual respect on our roads.
On another note, as road rage incidents multiply, the question of a points-based driver's license resurfaces. Many stakeholders believe such a system could help hold drivers more accountable and more effectively penalize aggressive driving behavior.
