Rashmita Chattoo, 18: Rabbit Breeder and Advocate for Independence

Rashmita Chattoo, an 18-year-old from Grand-Bois, Mauritius, has turned her childhood passion for rabbits into a thriving business. While many her age aspire to corporate careers or prestigious degrees, Rashmita finds fulfillment in caring for these furry creatures.

Her journey began at the tender age of six when she received her first rabbit, marking the start of a lifelong love affair with these animals. Growing up in a lively household, with a mother who is a midwife and a father who is a mechanic, Rashmita sought solace in the gentle company of rabbits. "Rabbits are like children; they need care, attention, and lots of love," she says.

She has a unique bond with her rabbits, describing how they comfort her during moments of sadness, sensing her emotions. While other teenagers are busy on social media, Rashmita dedicates her time to building shelters and learning about rabbit care. Today, her family garden is home to several adult rabbits and their offspring, each known by name and personality.

"This one's Snowy, a New Zealand breed who loves carrots but gets moody if I move his bowl," she laughs. She raises four varieties: the affectionate Lionhead, the soft and silky Angora, the friendly New Zealand, and the elegant English Spot.

At 16, instead of focusing solely on exams like her peers, Rashmita started her own rabbit breeding business, creating clean and ventilated cages and welcoming her first litters. In just two years, her reputation has spread across southern Mauritius, with families seeking rabbits from her.

"I personally handle deliveries to ensure the rabbits arrive stress-free, and I always educate new owners on proper care," she states proudly. Rashmita’s commitment goes beyond sales; she respects the bond between humans and animals and keeps a record of births and adoptions, often receiving updates and photos from satisfied owners.

Her mother, initially anxious about her daughter's venture, now admires Rashmita's dedication, while her father assists with constructing enclosures. She wakes up at 5 AM daily to care for her rabbits, preparing a balanced diet of fresh vegetables, hay, and pellets.

Rashmita is selective about breeding, aiming for healthy, well-cared-for rabbits. Now that she has completed her secondary education, she is fully invested in her business, aiming for independence and a meaningful career. "I always dreamed of having my own work. If you love what you do, success will follow," she reflects, surrounded by her rabbits in the golden afternoon sun, feeling like they are her family and guiding her path to independence.
