Launch of the CIEL Group’s Tropical Agrihood Project - Navin Ramgoolam Revives the ‘Moris Ile Durable’ Agenda in Ferney
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam called for a strong partnership between the public and private sectors to accelerate Mauritius's transition to a green and circular economy. He spoke at the launch of the CIEL Group's Tropical Agrihood project at the Falaise Rouge restaurant in Ferney. The ceremony was attended by several ministers, members of the National Assembly, CIEL Group's CEO Guillaume Dalais, and CIEL Properties' CEO Jean-Noël Wong Wan Khin.
Located in La Vallée de Ferney, the Tropical Agrihood project aims to seamlessly integrate housing with agricultural operations and natural landscapes, fostering a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature.
In his keynote address, Dr. Ramgoolam reaffirmed the government's commitment to advancing the 'Moris Ile Durable' agenda to tackle major global challenges like climate change and the energy crisis. "The development of renewable energies and the promotion of a circular economy are no longer options; they are a matter of survival," he stated.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgency for small island developing states (SIDS) like Mauritius to optimize the use of natural resources, rethink consumption patterns, mitigate the effects of climate change, and enhance food security. He also called for a strengthening of the agriculture and tourism sectors while further tapping into the potential of the blue economy. "Mauritius has always demonstrated a strong sense of duty and resilience. Together, we can build a nation that is both competitive and environmentally friendly," Dr. Ramgoolam asserted.
Regarding the Tropical Agrihood project, the Prime Minister praised it as an exemplary illustration of collaboration between the public and private sectors, combining agriculture, community, and conservation. He believes this model, based on regenerative agriculture and agro-entrepreneurship, could revitalize the agricultural sector, create new jobs, promote ecotourism, and inspire sustainable development. It would also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, and strengthening the circular economy.
Dr. Ramgoolam further congratulated the CIEL Group for its bold vision and ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and responsible development. He acknowledged the efforts of the Ferney Conservation Trust, which manages nearly 200 hectares of nature reserves and protects about 360 acres of conservation areas.
The Prime Minister concluded by emphasizing that such initiatives demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile economic development with environmental protection, thereby building a more sustainable future for Mauritius.
