BAI Case: PwC International and Grant Thornton International Deny All Responsibility
The legal dispute between Dawood Rawat and three international firms continues in the Supreme Court. Two of these firms, which Rawat has implicated, responded to his claims through affidavits. The documents were submitted yesterday to Chief Justice Bibi Rehana Mungly-Gulbul. These firms contest their summons in the lawsuit filed by Dawood Rawat, which demands Rs 100 billion against them, several former political leaders, and financial institutions.
Central to the discussions is the accountability of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Ltd, Grant Thornton International Ltd, and Brussels Worldwide Services BV in the dismantling of the BAI group. In an affidavit sworn in Washington by Alicia Llosa Chang on behalf of PwC International, the firm states that it has no contractual or controlling relationship with the Mauritian entities involved. It argues that it cannot be held liable for the actions or omissions of PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd (PwC Mauritius) or its former executives, including André Bonieux, Mushtaq Oosman, and Yogesh Rai Basgeet.
PwC International emphasizes that member firms of the PwC network are legally independent entities, each with their own governance, and responsible for their activities within their respective jurisdictions. It disputes Dawood Rawat's assertion that these firms operate as a single organization.
The same applies to Grant Thornton International Ltd. In a sworn affidavit by Daniel Harry Lichtenstein on behalf of the firm, it denies that Grant Thornton Ltd of Mauritius and the international firm are one and the same organization.
Both firms also highlight that the Supreme Court previously dismissed Dawood Rawat's motion on September 12, 2025, which sought to compel the three international firms to provide a guarantee of $100,000 each before contesting their summons. PwC International considers this request unfounded and seeks for the action against it to be dismissed. The three cases have been adjourned to November 10, 2025, for further proceedings.
