The Minister of Health Visits the Site of the Future Ultra-Modern SSRN Hospital

The government is advancing the development of a modern and ultra-modern facility, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National (SSRN) Hospital, on a 25-acre site. In line with the project preparation process, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, visited the SSRN hospital site on Monday, October 27, 2025, to assess the conditions before construction begins.

This project, estimated at Rs 4 billion, aims to enhance healthcare services and more effectively meet the needs of the population in the northern region and throughout the country. The current SSRN hospital, built in the late 1960s, contains essential buildings and blocks that have now exceeded their useful life of over 50 years. The future establishment will cover 75,000 square meters and will incorporate modern infrastructure and cutting-edge medical technologies to improve service delivery.

Furthermore, the new hospital will have the capacity for approximately 500 beds, several intensive care units, and multiple operating theaters, providing modern facilities that meet international standards. It will offer a range of medical specialties, including general internal medicine, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, orthopedics, surgery, pediatrics, neurosurgery, and psychiatry.

The consolidated layout of the hospital and its spacious parking are designed to ensure smooth and efficient movement for staff and patients. This new project will enhance service delivery by providing modern operating rooms for all services, including orthopedics, as well as a fully equipped pharmacy with ample storage space and functional counters, building on existing facilities to meet current and future healthcare needs.
