[Tai Chi] Mauritius Shines at the World Championships in Taiwan
The Mauritian delegation from the Tai Chi Chuan Federation of Mauritius excelled at the 9th World Taichi Championship, organized by the Taiwanese Ministry of Sports and Education in collaboration with the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee and the Republic of China Sports Federation.
Under the guidance of Shifu Dr. Yasin M. Owadally, a team of 22 participants proudly represented Mauritius at this international competition, which takes place every two years and gathers federations from 37 countries across five continents.
For its second participation, the Mauritian federation presented an original choreography titled 'East West,' a group Tai Chi performance executed with decorative chopsticks. Created and directed by Dr. Owadally, this performance garnered admiration from both the jury and the audience, earning the highest accolade: 'Exceptional Performance,' awarded to only three countries, including Mauritius.
The Mauritian team also competed in the 'Free Hands' category (Yang Tai Chi 48), consisting of six athletes: Dr. Yasin Owadally, Qudsiya Owadally, Nabila Owadally, Jean-Claude Wong, Marie-France Wong, and Françoise Tang. Their performance, praised for its technical mastery and fluidity, secured them a gold medal with an exceptional score of 9.5.
The medal and certificate award ceremonies were held on October 25 and 26, in a festive atmosphere marking the culmination of several months of preparation. Dr. Yasin M. Owadally was also elected vice-president of the International Federation Committee, a nomination that will enable him to actively contribute to the strategic decisions of the global organization.
At the closing banquet, the Mauritian delegation thrilled the audience with a dance to the lively rhythm of 'Ratintin,' inviting other delegations to join in the festivities in a spirit of brotherhood and cultural sharing.
Proud of their achievements, the Mauritian team returns home triumphant, proudly waving the national flag and confirming Mauritius's rising prominence on the international Tai Chi scene.
