Title: Anil Bachoo: "A National Commission to Ensure Healthcare Quality"
Content: Anil Bachoo has announced the establishment of a National Commission aimed at improving healthcare standards across all hospitals in Mauritius. Facing significant challenges such as staffing shortages and the need for digital innovation, the Mauritian public health service is set to undergo a transformation under Bachoo's leadership at the Ministry of Health.
In the preface of the Annual Report on Performance for the 2024-2025 financial year, he outlines his vision for a patient-centered public health system supported by digital innovation and new technologies. While he assures that the quality of patient care has not been compromised, he emphasizes the urgency of forming a National Commission for Healthcare Quality to facilitate standard monitoring and continuous improvement in hospitals.
Bachoo stresses the importance of preventive measures in healthcare, particularly in addressing non-communicable diseases that pose a major health challenge. The Ministry is adopting a prevention-focused approach based on early detection, public mobilization, and tailored policy interventions.
Despite a slight reduction in the number of healthcare professionals, with 1,728 doctors in public service, including 407 specialists, and a decrease in nurses and midwives from 3,796 in 2023 to 3,576 in 2024, the Ministry has implemented around 695 recruitments and promotions in various healthcare roles during the financial year 2024-2025. This includes regional health directors, medical superintendents, and nursing staff, among others.
The Brown Sequard Mental Health Care Centre has also seen a significant reduction in admissions, attributed to improved community services and early intervention.
In summary, Anil Bachoo's initiatives aim to enhance the quality of healthcare in Mauritius through structured oversight and a focus on preventive health strategies.
