Waste Management: Rodrigues Island Plans to Export Non-Recyclable Waste to Mauritius

On Monday, November 3, 2025, the Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues, Franceau Grandcourt, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change, Rajesh Bhagwan, at the Ministry's headquarters in Port-Louis.

The Deputy Minister, Ms. Joanna Bérenger, and the Member of Parliament, Ms. Dianette Henriette-Manan, were also present at the meeting, which was part of the Chief Commissioner's participation in the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30).

In a statement following the meeting, the Chief Commissioner mentioned that the discussions provided an opportunity to enhance collaboration between Rodrigues, the ministry, and the Rodrigues Regional Assembly, emphasizing that environmental issues concern everyone.

According to him, the meeting focused on waste management, covering both waste treatment and the potential export of non-recyclable waste to Mauritius. He also noted that the legal framework governing waste management and its effective application in Rodrigues was discussed.

Franceau Grandcourt also indicated that the minister and the deputy minister have been invited to Rodrigues to engage in more detailed discussions on environmental issues, including Rodrigues' participation in COP30. "Rodrigues has much to contribute to COP and can also raise key environmental challenges alongside the Mauritian delegation," he added.

The review of the emergency plan for oil spill responses, aimed at integrating Rodrigues into national preparedness efforts, thereby strengthening the island's capacity to respond effectively in the future, was also on the agenda.
