Port Louis: Sixteen Buildings Designated as Safe Zones in Case of Flooding

Port Louis is preparing to face potential flooding like never before. Sixteen strategic buildings in the capital, including the SBM Tower, the Mauritius Telecom Tower, and the City Council of Port Louis, have been designated as safe zones in the event of rising waters.

The public can be directed to these sites, whether they are public or private buildings. Initially, the police and members of the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) will be mobilized to oversee the evacuation to these locations. Signage will be installed later to help guide the public.

This initiative is part of a broader awareness program for the response and evacuation plan led by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC).

Police Superintendent Anerood Sookhareea, representing the NDRRMC, indicated that concrete measures will soon be implemented to ensure that Port Louis remains calm and avoids panic in the event of heavy rains.

He spoke during an awareness session organized by the NDRRMC in Port Louis on Friday, November 7.
