Michaela Harte Case: Dublin Renews Call for Cooperation with Mauritius

Nearly fifteen years after the murder of Michaela Harte McAreavey in Mauritius, Irish Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris is eager to revive efforts to shed light on this case.

The Irish government has once again offered technical assistance from the Northern Ireland Police Service (PSNI) to Mauritian authorities.

During the week, Simon Harris met with the victim's loved ones – her husband, brother, and sister-in-law – along with lawyer Barra McGrory. Following this meeting, he announced that he had instructed his office to reiterate the PSNI's offer of collaboration to support the investigation.

For context, Michaela Harte, 27, was murdered in January 2011 while on her honeymoon at the Legends hotel in Grand-Gaube. Two employees of the establishment were tried at Assizes in Mauritius but were acquitted in 2012.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ireland also indicated that Dublin will reach out to the Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs in the coming weeks. Simon Harris also plans to discuss the matter with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to rally joint support for this cause.

After this meeting, John McAreavey, the late victim's husband, shared an emotional message on Instagram: "Fifteen years of waiting and fighting. The pain does not fade, but neither does the determination. The fight for justice continues."
