[Tragedy at Cité-La-Cure] A 3-Year-Old Child Struck by a Car, Driver Tests Positive for Drugs

Emotions are running high in Cité-La-Cure following the tragic accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon, claiming the life of little Keyan Alfred, aged three. The incident happened around 4 PM on Sainte-Marie Street, near a bus stop, while the child was walking with his father and a resident of Poudre-d’Or.

According to initial investigation reports, a car driven by 33-year-old Kenny Steven Lowtunn reportedly struck the trio from behind. The impact was so severe that the young boy was thrown to the ground. He was rushed to Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The autopsy, conducted that evening, concluded that the cause of death was a laceration of the liver due to the impact.

The child's 20-year-old father and the third pedestrian, a 43-year-old man, were also injured. The father was able to leave the hospital after receiving necessary treatment, while the other victim remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Tests on the driver revealed a negative result for alcohol but positive for drug use. He spent the night in a cell at the Plaine-Verte police station before appearing in the Port-Louis District Court on Thursday, where a provisional charge was filed against him.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from the Safe City network to clarify the circumstances of the accident. The road was dry at the time of the incident and showed no apparent obstacles.

In the neighborhood, anger and sadness prevail. Marianne Alfred, the great-grandmother of little Keyan, struggles to contain her grief. "A reckless car came barreling down and swept them away," she confides, heartbroken.

The funeral for the young boy took place Thursday afternoon in a poignant atmosphere. Family, friends, and local residents gathered to pay their final respects, as an entire neighborhood mourns the loss of a child taken too soon.
