Gaza: The United States Pressures the UN Security Council to Adopt the Peace Plan

Gaza: The United States has called on the UN Security Council to unite in adopting their resolution endorsing Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza, warning of serious consequences for Palestinians otherwise.

"Attempts to sow discord while an agreement on this resolution is actively being negotiated have serious, tangible, and completely avoidable consequences for Palestinians in Gaza," stated a spokesperson for the US mission to the UN in a press release.

"The ceasefire is fragile, and we urge the Council to unite and move forward to ensure the much-needed peace," he added, referring to a "historic opportunity to pave the way for lasting peace in the Middle East by supporting this resolution."

Last week, the Americans officially began negotiations within the Council on a draft text that "endorses" the plan of the US president, which led to the establishment of a fragile ceasefire in the Palestinian territory on October 10.

The third version of the text seen by AFP on Thursday "welcomes" the establishment of a "peace committee" that is to be chaired by Donald Trump, an organ of "transitional governance" with a mandate until the end of December 2027.

It also "authorizes" the deployment of an "International Stabilization Force" (ISF) that can use "all necessary measures to carry out its mandate in accordance with international law": supporting border security in cooperation with Israel and Egypt, demilitarizing Gaza, disarming "non-state armed groups," protecting civilians, and training a Palestinian police force...

Unlike previous versions, the new text addresses the future of a potential Palestinian state.

After reforming the Palestinian Authority and advancing the reconstruction of Gaza, "the conditions could finally be in place for a credible path towards Palestinian self-determination and statehood," the text states, assuring that the US will establish a "dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians" to reach an agreement on "a political horizon towards peaceful and prosperous coexistence."

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed optimism regarding this resolution on Wednesday, stating that they are "making progress on the language" and hoping for a vote "very soon."

However, while it seems that Council members support the principle of creating the "peace committee" and the force, diplomatic sources noted that several questions are raised by the text, especially regarding the lack of a monitoring mechanism by the Council, the role of the Palestinian Authority, and the details of the ISF mandate.
