Education: Key Stakeholders Encouraged to Adopt AI in Classrooms

The Minister of Education and Human Resources, Dr. Mahend Gungapersad, emphasized the critical need to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) and harness its potential in classrooms for the future of learners.

He spoke on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Moka, during the launch of the training program "Embracing Artificial Intelligence and Technological Change in Education," an initiative by the Institute of Technical Education and Technology (ITET) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources.

In his speech, the Minister highlighted that integrating AI into classrooms should not overlook the human aspect of teaching, urging educators to use both their heart and mind to provide the best for their students.

According to him, educators must continue to consider ethical and pedagogical issues when adopting AI. He warned against the risks associated with a shortcut culture and over-reliance on AI, which can hinder creative and critical thinking.

Dr. Mahend Gungapersad also insisted on the numerous opportunities that AI offers in the education sector, such as pairing experienced teachers with a larger number of students and establishing personal coaches for each child based on their learning capabilities.

The Minister stated that the training program aims to enhance educators' skills to equip them with the necessary tools to improve the teaching and learning process.

For his part, the director of ITET, Richard Nemorin, mentioned that the training program aims to integrate technological changes into education. "This is a historic initiative that marks a new chapter in the nation’s journey towards building a skilled and innovative workforce," he added.
