Having become a colony in 1896 and gaining independence in June 1960, Madagascar is still searching for its identity. Its first president, Philibert Tsiranana, was removed due to being perceived as too close to colonial powers and facing multiple shortcomings. Between 1975 and 1992, the country experienced a Marxist/socialist regime under "the Red Admiral" Didier Ratsiraka, who was initially appointed by the military but later veered off course. Nevertheless, he returned to power from 1997 to 2002.
