Car Explosion in New Delhi: Indian Police Announce Arrest of 'Suicide Bomber' Accomplice

On Sunday evening, Indian police announced the arrest of a man from Kashmir, identified as an accomplice of the suicide bomber responsible for a car explosion that resulted in at least 10 deaths last Monday in the capital city of New Delhi.

According to a statement from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Kashmir resident participated in the suicide car bombing near the Red Fort, one of the most visited monuments in the metropolis.

The NIA reported that the federal anti-terrorism police confirmed the attack resulted in 10 fatalities and 32 injuries.

Earlier reports from a New Delhi hospital official indicated that there were 12 fatalities and approximately 30 injuries.

The accomplice, identified as Amir Rashid Ali, is suspected of being involved in the purchase of the vehicle driven by Umar Un Nabi, a medical professor also from Kashmir, who was working at Al Falah University in Faridabad, a suburb of the capital.

The identity of the individual who died in the explosion has been confirmed through scientific analysis, according to the NIA.

This attack is the deadliest to occur in India since an incident on April 22, which killed 26 Hindu civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir.

India immediately blamed Pakistan for that incident and launched reprisals against "terrorist sites" on its soil, leading to three days of military confrontations between the two rival nuclear powers, the most serious since 1999.

Islamabad has denied any involvement.

The information released by the NIA on Sunday evening is the first official update since the explosion.

On Wednesday evening, the Indian government had only referred to the incident as a "terrorist act" and promised to "identify the perpetrators, their accomplices, and supporters, and bring them to justice as soon as possible."
