Sonia, the Mother of Nigel Décidé: "I Apologize for What My Son Has Done"
Sonia, the mother of Nigel Décidé, expressed her sorrow and offered her apologies to the family of Muzzamil Hossenboccus, a 30-year-old motorcyclist who died after being struck by a car driven by her son, 19-year-old Nigel.
The weight of her son's arrest bears heavily on Sonia (a fictitious name). Nigel has been in jail for eight days following his second arrest on Saturday, November 15. She confides that she has been living in deep sadness since the tragic event. According to preliminary investigations, Nigel, a fisherman without a license, was under the influence of drugs at the time of the incident.
Sonia extends her heartfelt condolences to Muzzamil's grieving family, stating, "I sincerely apologize for what my son has done," her voice breaking. The accident, which occurred on the night of November 8-9, shocked the public. Out of fear, Nigel initially fled the scene. Sonia, 40, recounts, "He was scared and ran away; everyone was looking for the driver."
She notes that Nigel was arrested and subsequently released under conditions after his first charge of involuntary manslaughter, before the Director of Public Prosecutions ordered his second arrest.
"My heart aches for this young man; he was just married…" she confides, acknowledging the shock for Muzzamil Hossenboccus's family.
Sonia does not seek to excuse her son, stating, "I give him full blame for what he has done." She explains that she often warned him against driving: "I told him several times not to drive because he has no license. Even drinking should not happen when driving; now he has taken drugs, I have already put him in custody before." She also expresses her worry for her son’s life, saying, "As his mother, I am worried for him; his life is at risk. Today, my sorrow is knowing that those who have lost their loved ones are suffering."
Sonia claims she was unaware that Nigel was driving that night. After the crash, he allegedly contacted the family, saying, "He told me that he saw a motorcycle turn in front of him, but he didn't know when it happened."
According to her, her son returned to the scene to try to assist the injured but was intimidated by onlookers, who demanded to know where the driver was. Sonia advised him to report to the police immediately. She insists that he is also devastated: "He is distressed himself."
Through Le Défi Plus, Sonia reiterates her apologies to Muzzamil Hossenboccus's family and to his young widow: "What my son has done, I do not excuse him, but he did not do it on purpose," she insists.
On Wednesday, the police conducted a reconstruction of the events with Nigel Décidé and the passenger of the vehicle. Under heavy police presence, the young man detailed the impact site and circumstances, explaining how he collided with the motorcycle and where he parked the car. The passenger is being prosecuted for failing to assist a person in danger.
Arrested on November 8 and charged the following day, Nigel Décidé was released under conditions. However, following objections and the DPP's recommendation, he was arrested again. During his appearance on November 17 in Rose-Hill, three new provisional charges were added: failure to assist a person in danger, driving under the influence of drugs, and driving without a license. He has been detained since then.
Sonia explains that Nigel played a significant role in the household since his father, Désiré Décidé, known as Nono, was imprisoned in Réunion for drug trafficking. She denies any involvement of her son in this matter: "Because of his father's imprisonment in Réunion, are they accusing us of being drug traffickers?"
Nigel primarily helped with managing the home and bills: "He was working and helping me with the household. He was providing cash for water and electricity bills."
