Bérenger Outlines the Commitments for a 'New Beginning'

Paul Bérenger, the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the MMM, expressed optimism about recent government tensions during a press conference at the Government House. He described the ongoing crisis as an opportunity for a 'new beginning,' with electoral reform at the forefront of his agenda.

Bérenger stated that the decision to stay in the government was not a personal one but a collective decision made by the party after discussions with Navin Ramgoolam. He emphasized that his focus was on his role as Deputy Prime Minister and clarified that he never intended for the MMM to exit the government.

He praised the achievements of the coalition government since the 2024 elections, highlighting the end of the MSM's rule, the restoration of democracy, enhanced freedom of information, police reorganization, and a significant reduction in corruption. Bérenger also addressed the economic stability of the alliance, which managed to avoid a downgrade from Moody's despite inheriting a massive debt.

On electoral reform, Bérenger outlined plans to separate it from other constitutional reforms and suggested introducing proportional representation by adding twenty new deputies to the current first-past-the-post system. He confirmed that public consultations would soon take place to gather suggestions.

Bérenger also discussed the urgent creation of a National Crime Agency as a second priority, aiming for swift action. Changes in police and prison management are also on the agenda, indicating a shift towards improved governance in these sectors.

Regarding Air Mauritius, a strategic agreement was reached about the role of Megh Pillay, with plans for new boards to help the airline restart on solid grounds. Furthermore, Bérenger called for a rational debate on the legalization of cannabis, noting the changing dynamics around drug enforcement and the need for updated laws.

He firmly rejected accusations of nepotism within the MMM, particularly concerning his daughter, and stressed that there is no dynastic rule within the party. Bérenger concluded by addressing inflation and the challenges of imported price rises, indicating that while they cannot be stopped, their impact can be mitigated.

Finally, he commented on the recent visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, describing the discussions as extremely positive and hinting at potential future cooperation between France, India, and Mauritius on various critical issues.
