Consumption - Black Friday: High Footfall Expected in Stores

Despite ongoing inflation and a weakened purchasing power, Mauritians are not expected to shy away from Black Friday this week, according to retailers. In fact, since mid-November, stores and shopping centers have seen a surge of crowds, confirming the event's establishment in year-end shopping habits.

While inflation continues to strain household budgets, Black Friday remains an unmissable event for Mauritians. In stores, shopping malls, and major retailers, shoppers are determined to seize the best deals before the year's end. At TFP, promotions started unusually early this year on November 14. According to director Mousheerl Maharaullee, this decision was made to give customers more time to take full advantage of the discounts. “A few days are no longer enough. We have extended the promotion period until November 30 to allow everyone to benefit,” he explains. Discounts can reach up to 75% on a wide range of products, including mattresses, dining tables, children's furniture, and sofa sets.

Tradition

The director of TFP also notes a significant influx since the promotions began. “Mauritians recognize that the cost of living is high. However, buying new furniture before the New Year remains a tradition in many families,” he emphasizes. Despite the economic context, sales are on the rise, with an increase of nearly 15% compared to other times of the year. This trend shows that for many, Black Friday is a strategic opportunity to make significant purchases at the best prices.

Shopping Centers

The excitement is equally palpable in shopping centers. At Tribeca Mall, management expects a notable increase in visitor flow, driven not only by promotions but also by extended opening hours. “Last year, we already observed a very high turnout. This year, we anticipate a similar level, if not slightly higher, especially on Friday and Saturday,” says Pamela Bhuruth, Strategy & Marketing Director of Tribeca Mall. According to the mall, inflation is changing consumer behavior, but during Black Friday, this trend reverses. “Customers are looking for good deals. They prioritize essential or thoughtful purchases, which enhances interest in this period of massive promotions,” she states.

For Ascencia malls — Bagatelle Mall, So’flo, Riche-Terre Mall, Bo’Valon Mall, Phoenix Mall, Kendra, and Les Allées — the atmosphere promises to be particularly lively from November 28 to 30. This year, the brand is launching “Black Friday Top Chrono,” an interactive game offering attractive prizes, including an iPhone 17 Pro Max, an electric scooter, and vouchers worth up to Rs 25,000. “The timer can start at any moment, so be ready to take on the challenge,” announces Sophie Audibert, Portfolio Marketing and Communication Manager at Ascencia. With various promotions and anticipated increased visitor traffic, these malls are preparing to welcome a significant influx of shoppers.

Measures for Smooth Operations

At Tribeca Mall, extended hours will allow for smoother shopping throughout the day. “The mall has also optimized its traffic plan in the parking area, strengthened its teams on the ground, and ensured close coordination with stores to manage stock, queues, and events effectively,” explains Pamela Bhuruth. Real-time monitoring of common areas is planned for quick intervention if needed. Communication regarding offers, hours, and routes has been intensified to guide visitors.

In Ascencia malls, several measures will enhance the customer experience. Some malls will remain open until midnight, and enhanced security will be deployed. A free shuttle service connecting Rose Hill to Bagatelle Mall will be available, as announced by Sophie Audibert, to make travel easier and encourage a controlled influx.
