Robbery with Violence on a Carpenter: Suspect Lynched, Then Assaulted Again in Hospital Bed
A robbery with violence case took an unexpected turn when two men assaulted the suspect in the hospital, despite police being present to monitor him.
The 34-year-old man, suspected of violently robbing a carpenter in Vacoas on Saturday, had been lynched before being handed over to the police. After being admitted to Victoria Hospital in Candos, he was attacked again on Sunday, this time in his hospital bed, by two individuals.
The events date back to Saturday morning around 5:30 AM. The 54-year-old carpenter was set to carry out renovation work at a place of worship. Upon arrival, he encountered a stranger inside and asked for an explanation. However, the situation escalated quickly.
The intruder's response was immediate and brutal: he lunged at the carpenter, striking him multiple times in the face and head, throwing him to the ground. Taking advantage of the moment, the assailant stole two rolls of 100-meter electrical cables before fleeing.
Shortly after, as the carpenter was regaining his composure, the thief returned to the scene and kicked him several times. The attacker also snatched his mobile phone before escaping. The total estimated loss was around Rs 48,000.
Injured, the carpenter was rushed to the hospital for treatment. He later filed a complaint for robbery with violence at the Vacoas police station, claiming he could identify his assailant. CCTV footage from the area was retrieved for investigation.
Soon after, volunteers located the 34-year-old suspect, a local resident, and beat him up. When the central division's crime unit arrested him, he complained of pain and reported being assaulted. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and placed under strict police surveillance.
However, the situation did not end there. On Sunday around 1 PM, while the Vacoas resident was in his hospital bed, two men arrived during visiting hours. They approached him, and one of them struck him several times in the face with a full-face helmet, while the other attempted to do the same. The police officer monitoring the suspect intervened just in time to prevent a more serious assault and managed to push the two visitors out of the room.
The police are currently continuing their investigations into both the initial assault and the attack that occurred within the hospital itself.
