Theft of Nearly Rs 800,000: A CWA Cashier Targeted by a Complaint
A cashier from the Central Water Authority (CWA) is facing a complaint for the theft of approximately Rs 800,000, affecting the Central Electricity Board (CEB).
The scandal came to light after a correspondence from the CEB highlighted discrepancies in the deposits of bills collected at the counter, which was the responsibility of the suspect. A CWA official then alerted the police.
The 26-year-old cashier was suspended following a disciplinary committee's decision. In his complaint, the chief cashier of the CWA noted that there is an agreement with the CEB for the collection of payments and their deposit into the CEB's bank account.
On November 17, the CEB notified the CWA management after noticing discrepancies in the counter deposits. An internal investigation revealed several missing amounts between November 6 and November 17:
• November 6: over Rs 127,000
• November 7: over Rs 187,000
• November 10: over Rs 116,000
• November 11: over Rs 152,000
• November 13: over Rs 75,000
• November 14: over Rs 145,000
• November 17: over Rs 23,000
The police investigation will now determine the perpetrator and the methods used in the misappropriation of these funds, totaling nearly Rs 800,000.
