Diabetes and Amputations: The Ministry of Health Relies on Indian Expertise to Enhance Care

On Monday, November 24, 2025, during a visit to Sir Anerood Jugnauth Hospital in Flacq, the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, met with Dr. Vinay Kumar, a visiting vascular surgeon from Yashoda Hospital in India.

In a statement, Anil Bachoo reminded that the Ministry of Health and Wellness had signed a memorandum of understanding with Yashoda Hospital to allow Mauritian patients to be treated in India. This agreement also includes the arrival of Indian specialists in Mauritius to perform complex surgical procedures and to train local medical teams.

Dr. Vinay Kumar is in Mauritius to perform specialized procedures on patients with obstructed or damaged blood vessels. This includes creating arteriovenous fistulas, which are essential for dialysis patients, as well as surgical interventions to treat peripheral arterial disease, a condition that restricts blood flow to the limbs and can lead to severe complications. His visit is part of ongoing efforts to enhance advanced surgical care for patients with serious vascular diseases.

The Minister of Health also mentioned that Dr. Vinay Kumar had performed around twenty surgical operations during his stay, 14 of which involved complex vascular cases. He noted that approximately 40% of the Mauritian population suffers from diabetes, leading to about 700 amputations each year. Anil Bachoo added that the interventions by specialists from Yashoda Hospital could help prevent amputations and ensure more effective surgical care for patients.
