Following President Macron's Visit: Establishment of French Universities in Mauritius Made Easier

The signing of several agreements between Mauritius and France paves the way for the easier establishment of French universities on the island. This strengthened cooperation aims to harmonize academic standards, consolidate partnerships, and position Mauritius as a regional university hub.

A memorandum of understanding signed on November 20 between the Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Kaviraj Sukon, and Frédéric Bontems, the French ambassador to Mauritius, opens the door for enhanced cooperation between Mauritius and France. French universities will be able to establish themselves on the island within a simplified framework, marked by quality guarantees and strong academic partnerships.

On November 20, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Kaviraj Sukon hailed this advancement as a "historic day." Following a recent agreement with England, this new accord facilitates the entry of French universities into Mauritius. According to him, this establishment can occur directly or through partnerships, without the lengthy accreditation process.

A second agreement was signed by Coralie Chevalier, president of the High Council for the Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres), and Professor (Dr.) Romeela Mohee, Commissioner of the Higher Education Commission. This agreement aims to define the general modalities of cooperation in quality assurance in higher education and research. This partnership will allow for a better understanding of the university systems of both countries, contribute to their development, and promote academic cooperation, particularly with Francophone institutions.

Both organizations plan regular exchanges to harmonize their standards and ensure mutual recognition of academic practices.

A third agreement strengthens collaboration with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business School, which will continue to offer courses leading to a national French diploma. These initiatives, concluded during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Mauritius, mark a new stage in university cooperation between the two countries. They aim to strengthen the Mauritian higher education system and position the island as a true regional academic hub capable of attracting students and researchers from around the world.
