Launch of the Environmental Observatory: a Digital Hub for Ecological Transparency
The Environmental Observatory (ODE), a digital platform centralizing data on the state of the environment and ecological issues in Mauritius, was inaugurated on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the Hennessy Park Hotel in Ébène. Its goal is to promote transparency, information, and citizen mobilization in the face of the country's environmental challenges.
Accessible online at https://ode.govmu.org, the Observatory was developed in collaboration with several ministries, public agencies, and institutions, with financial support from the French Development Agency (AFD). It offers over 200 indicators covering 16 thematic areas, from pollution to biodiversity, and is aimed at students, researchers, policymakers, and citizens.
Collective Responsibility
During his opening speech, Minister of the Environment Rajesh Bhagwan referred to the platform as a "virtual parliament for the environment," emphasizing its role as a bridge towards shared knowledge and collective responsibility. He stressed the need for reliable information, expert responses, and regular updates to better address challenges related to waste management, pollution, climate change, coastal erosion, and the loss of biodiversity.
The minister also reminded that the environmental battle relies on changing habits and holding everyone accountable. Joanna Bérenger, Junior Minister, advocated for increased public participation to build a culture of sustainability and collective responsibility. Laëtitia Habchi, a representative from the AFD, highlighted the role of the ODE as an essential tool for disseminating information, raising awareness, and encouraging civic engagement.
Designed as a centralized and interactive hub, the Observatory aims to foster understanding, transparency, and concrete action, mobilizing both institutions and citizens to address the island's environmental challenges.
