Clean Energy: MCB and Omnicane Launch Sustainable Partnership

MCB Group Ltd and Omnicane Ltd have joined forces to create an investment vehicle dedicated to financing renewable energy projects in Mauritius and the region. This initiative will encompass solar, hydroelectric, and wind energy, with the first project being a 4.8 MW photovoltaic power plant currently under construction in Poudre d’Or, located in the northern part of the island, as part of the CEB's MSDG program.

The plant, built by Ecoasis Energy Solutions Ltd, will feature around 8,200 solar panels spread across four hectares, with two solar parks associated with MCB Ltd and Omnicane Milling Ltd, in partnership with Calycé International. The plant is expected to be operational by April 2026.

It is projected to generate nearly 7,700 MWh annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 7,000 tons each year. Agrivoltaic practices will also be integrated to support food security.

The initial funding relies on shareholder funds and a green bond compliant with ICMA principles, structured and advised by MCB Financial Advisers.

According to Jacques M. d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane Ltd: "This partnership paves the way for the deployment of renewable energy projects in Mauritius and the region."

Eric Boban, CEO of Calycé, adds: "A long-term collaboration supported by a favorable governance framework."

Rony Lam, CEO of MCB Capital Markets, emphasizes: "This agreement brings together the necessary skills to realize a carbon reduction project."

This development aligns with the national goal of increasing the share of renewable energy and reducing coal usage by 2035.
