Government Imposes Strict Regulations for Gas Water Heaters
The Cabinet approved on Friday the promulgation of the Consumer Protection (Safety Requirements) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, which stipulates that no gas water heater can be sold to a consumer without being accompanied by:
(a) an exhaust duct for gas to the outside;
(b) a carbon monoxide detector;
(c) clear instructions in English and French;
(d) a prominently visible safety label on the packaging, in English and French.
These regulations will require that all marketed gas water heaters comply with standard MS EN 26, which sets the technical and safety criteria applicable to these devices.
This requirement will become mandatory six months after the publication of the regulations, allowing stakeholders time to procure compliant water heaters, obtain necessary certifications, and sell existing stocks that do not meet the prescribed standard.
