Night Market: Shakeel Mohamed Talks About a 'Dream', Salim Muthy Critiques...
The "Night Market" project, running from December 12 to January 5, 2026, is taking shape in Port-Louis as well as other towns and villages across the island. Every evening, from 6 PM to 1 AM, residents will be able to enjoy a lively night market inspired by similar concepts seen in Kuala Lumpur and India. The Minister of Housing and Land, Shakeel Mohamed, describes it as a "dream come true," combining entertainment, food stalls, and a festive atmosphere.
However, he emphasizes that "only those who meet certain conditions will be eligible for a stall." It will be imperative to reside in the area to qualify for tenancy, he stresses. Transparency will be crucial to ensure fairness and organization. Additionally, a cleaning crew will be present from 1 AM after the markets close to maintain cleanliness and uphold the city's image.
But this ambitious project is not universally accepted. Salim Muthy, an advocate for street vendors' rights, strongly criticizes the government's decision to hold these "Night Markets," particularly in Port-Louis. According to him, delays in decision-making have left vendors in uncertainty for too long, resulting in lost income for these small traders.
Salim Muthy is demanding a meeting with Minister Shakeel Mohamed to discuss the concerns of street vendors. He even threatens to send a letter to the Prime Minister to express his demands.
