A country must confront its own cowardice. For Mauritius, this moment recurs at every funeral. More than a hundred deaths since January. Ordinary people caught in a turn, a helmet improperly fastened, an overly aggressive bumper, a WhatsApp message read for two seconds too long. Over time, the numbers cease to be mere statistics: they become graves. And, in the wake of each funeral procession, we bury a little more of our national carelessness.
